To be very clear about it, this chart isn't ours. It's from Dr. Francis Deng on Twitter, the post is below, as well as the conversation on Twitter. He's worth following, and the conversation is significant. We just wanted to bring it to a wider audience.
In particular, what was notable about the chart were the significant declines across acute care, primary care, and psychiatry residency slots filled. (And if there was ever a time we needed more psychiatrists...) The number of slots available is up significantly, the number filled is down. That has led to some pretty wild discussions.
Declines of 5% to 12% in projected new entrants to primary and acute care ought to be sounding sirens all across medicine and government.
