The World is Ready for an Expanded Role for Advance Practice Nurses
Referencing CNSs, NPs, and APNs, the McGill study was a global study that included 38 countries. The study (along with the WHO) calls for expanding the scope of clinical nursing practice. It covers a variety of patient well-being indicators, as well as general access to care and safety. It’s an extensive meta-study that highlights the effectiveness of expanding the nursing scope in health care.

Here’s the Current Landscape of Nursing Education
While primarily aimed at contingent staffing as an interim solution, the first article provides a good examination of the growing demand-supply gap in nursing. Sixty-two percent of organizations report having over 12.5% of nursing staff positions vacant. Contributing factors include insufficient faculty, a lack of clinical training sites and labor, classroom constraints, and funding issues.
The second article, from KevinMD, is more of an editorial offering suggestions on how to manage the retirement wave of senior nurses—new roles, and, of course, money.

Urgent Needs in Nurse Practitioner Education
While focusing on clinical training hours, the article includes comments from many NP and DNP educators and practice managers on other aspects of NP education. It’s worth noting that there is no uniform funding for nurse practitioner preceptorships or residencies, and there isn’t a standard-setting organization beyond the certification exams. More than half of nurse practitioner preceptorships are employer-funded or even directly funded by student tuition.
Still, a lot of interesting points, including the lack of foundational training for managing and running a practice.
