Ransomware Attack Led to Harrowing Lapses at Ascension Hospitals, Staffers Say

An older (June) direct report about what it’s like to be in a hospital that is being attacked by ransomware hackers. Attacks on medical systems have been accelerating dramatically in recent years, they’ll usually pay.

The targets are getting larger too, as have the demands for money. Hospitals and medical payment systems are often pretty easy targets, as the level of trust of data and access is widespread across very large employee bases. Proposed First-Ever Federal Standards for Maternal Care Met with Mixed Response from Hospitals

In a move similar to the unfunded requirements for nursing home care, the CMMS has a series of proposals involving improving maternal mortality rates. Not a bad thing, but it’s pushing hospitals to fix things that may lay outside of the hospital walls, and isn’t proposing to reimburse for it. This is a complicated issue in and out of hospitals, and the proposals seem to recognize that fact. The reaction in and out of care environments has therefore been a little mixed. No one argues that U.S. maternal mortality rates are horrible, and that addressing them should be a priority. Most of the argument is about cost and whether they can really all be addressed inside hospital walls.

Regulatory Framework for Cannabis: A Position Paper From the American College of Physicians

The American College of Physicians tries to bring a coherent view to the mess of cannabis policy in the United States. Effectively as an FDA regulated product like tobacco or alcohol. But at the same time they are advocated evidence-based study, they’re also calling for insurance coverage. We definitely aren’t getting coverage for that glass of wine that’s supposed to improve heart health. Maybe. Sort of. This seems a bit of a mixed message on cannabis. But at least we’re at the stage of comprehensive attempts by medical societies to deal with the substance, that’s a start.
