Proposed First-Ever Federal Standards for Maternal Care Met with Mixed Response from Hospitals
In a move similar to the unfunded requirements for nursing home care, the CMMS has a series of proposals involving improving maternal mortality rates. Not a bad thing, but it’s pushing hospitals to fix things that may lay outside of the hospital walls, and isn’t proposing to reimburse for it. This is a complicated issue in and out of hospitals, and the proposals seem to recognize that fact. The reaction in and out of care environments has therefore been a little mixed. No one argues that U.S. maternal mortality rates are horrible, and that addressing them should be a priority. Most of the argument is about cost and whether they can really all be addressed inside hospital walls.
