Featuring hundreds of nurses holding signs that say “Trust Nurses Not AI”, and “AI has got to go”. The president of the California Nursing Association, Cathy Kennedy, RN, said, “*We know there is nothing inevitable about AI’s advancement into healthcare. No patient should be a guinea pig and no nurse should be replaced by a robot.*” The complaints weren’t covered well in the article, but the wide range of complaints mentioned in other coverage of the event included the Epic EHR real-time charting platform, Kaiser’s AI chatbot, false alarms on an AI tool used in real-time monitoring, and Kaiser’s Advance Alert Monitor, which analyzes EHR data. Not all of those are actually AI-based. AI is coming to medicine, in the form of CNNs for image and data analysis, and LLMs for conversational bots and rudimentary decision-making. It actually *is* inevitable, and we’d probably accomplish a lot more with open standards, regulatory and usage review, and a lot more training on how to utilize AI effectively. They got a bill through with a 6,000 hour supervised hours to qualify for independent practice, but while the bill made it out of committee, it’s not made it to the floor and doesn’t have a date scheduled, so now nurse organizations are working on public petition to get it to the floor. Missouri is not a direct petition state, this would be aimed at lobbying the speaker. The article is a good layout of the lobbying and legislative push to get independent practice through a legislative body. ACEP says the accreditation is aimed at emergency physician practice, but will expand in the future to include discussion with “other members of the care team”. The ENA says you can’t have an emergency care team without considering the NPs and RNs. ACEP’s concern appear to be more about defining physician roles and practice inside the ED, including some significant process changes inside the fine print, such as not having a physician sign-off on patients that were seen by an NP or PA.
