Blood vessels in eyes may help predict heart disease and biological aging risk
Emerging research suggests that the eye’s retina may offer a powerful, noninvasive window into cardiovascular and biological aging risk. By analyzing retinal scans from tens of thousands of participants, scientists found that the complexity of retinal blood vessels reflects overall vascular health—simpler vessel patterns were linked to higher rates of heart disease, inflammation, and shorter lifespan. The study also identified key molecular pathways that may drive these changes, highlighting the retina’s potential as an early biomarker for systemic aging and cardiovascular risk. This work could redefine how clinicians assess heart health—using the eyes to see far beyond vision.
