    ‘It Terrifies Me': Clinical Psychologist on Tech Overuse in the Age of AI

    EducationWeek is a subscription publication. You get a few free articles before the subscription blocker comes up. What’s terrifying the author in particular is deepfakes, but it’s a good compendium of the down sides of technology, applicable not just to kids, but to adults as well. As AI becomes cheaper, it’s going to compound and speed up the potential for harm and abuse.

    Problems with AI, and the amplifying effect it will have on abusive technology use, are so far poorly quantified. The first public release of a GPT was just a year ago. We’re in the ‘mostly positive’ camp in Challenger for our view of where AI can bring benefits, but aren’t ignorant of potential problems.

    An interesting article introducing the impact of words and treatment rituals in the placebo effect, and how placebo effects mimic some of the brain effects of drugs. “As members of the health profession, we are part of placebo effect, and investigations have shown that also in regular approved and effective drugs a percentage of placebo effect can be calculated.”

    OK. ‘Science-harvesting mercenaries’. We don’t know who did the writing in the ACR and SIR wording on the protest letter, but we so want to hire them for medical copywriting. This particular fight is over basivertebral nerve ablation. The science-harvesting mercenaries are Hayes Inc. As technology accelerates and specializes, there’s going to be a lot of these fights.
