Nurse Well-Being and the Nursing Shortage — Are They Connected?

The obvious answer is, "Well, duh..." But the article from Becker's contains a lot of interesting insights from a Relias study — 2024 Nurse Salary and Job Satisfaction Report. The number of respondents reporting work environment and flexibility as bigger issues than pay, as well as those reporting physical assault by a patient or a patient's family member, was surprising.

American Society of Anesthesiologists Files Trademark Complaint Against American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology

The American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA), until August 2021, was called the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. What a difference an "ology" makes. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) argues that the word "anesthesiologist" refers specifically to a physician and that the AANA should not be allowed to trademark their new name. It will take another two or three years to get a decision in the case.

The ASA claims that the new (ish) name for the AANA will confuse patients and "create discord in the care setting, risking patient safety." We expect to see a lot more of these types of legal cases, legislation, and lobbying as scope-of-practice battles increase over a shrinking compensation pie—which suggests there’s a different enemy here...

The battle to fund BSN programs at a community college level in California has been going on for years. California is one of the most competitive states for students to try and get a spot in a publicly funded state university, with total slots available for incoming students at a few hundred. Private programs number in the 1000’s of slots.

Governor Newsom has vetoed a bill allowing selected community colleges to offer BSN programs in cooperation with local healthcare facilities for clinical experience. He points to the $60 million grant funding in higher education institutions to push transfers of associates to BSN programs.
