Trump Announces CDC, FDA and Surgeon General Nominations

    The line-up looks like:

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. — Secretary of Department of Health and Human Services

Mehmet Oz, MD, MBA — US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

Dave Weldon, MD — Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

Marty Makary, MD, MPH, FACS — FDA Commissioner

Janette Nesheiwat, MD — Surgeon General

The CDC is coming under fire in this administration, particularly for its monetary relationships with industry. Dr. Weldon has previously suggested that vaccine safety should be managed by an independent organization under HHS. Dr. Makary’s views in books and papers have also been critical of the associations between the FDA and industry, as well as between insurance companies and the CMS. These two seem similar in their viewpoints.

Dr. Nsheiwat is a double-board-certified physician in EM and FM and runs a chain of urgent care clinics. She is a strong supporter of vaccinations and preventative care, including nutrition, continuous care environments, and accessibility within the health care system.

Most of the news about telehealth focuses on pushing for extensions of the current CMS authorizations beyond their expiration this year. While some of the support is genuine and largely aimed at senior care and mental health, some is driven by interests in prescribing and direct-to-consumer sales by pharmaceutical companies and providers. This study references many aspects of telehealth consumption that remain unclear—does it change prescribing habits, lead to overuse of antibiotics, and improve or decrease the quality of care?

Soon to be joining the beeping IV pump is an AI vision nanny designed to tell you when the patient has moved outside the boundaries of the hospital bed or is engaged in potential fall-risk positions on the bed. This is the first commercial product we’ve seen for AI-based vision inside a patient room. Handling this type of monitoring is something that vision-based AIs will excel at, but it does raise some privacy and data questions.

Vision-based AI has a lot to offer for standing fall risk, gait analysis, respiration monitoring, and privacy-oriented patient monitors, and this AI can identify and differentiate the patient in a room full of visitors and staff.
